Well, you can hand them one of these apps that can do the trick with a minor learning curve so they will be pleased and you will be relieved. Personally, I also find them quite useful when friends & family or clients (or any non-graphically skilled person) ask to do minor/boring tasks (like reducing a red eye). Some of them are pretty decent alternatives, not only for those who are not willing to spend the big bucks, but also for those who need some specific tasks done, like resizing a batch of picture without needing to run the almighty Photoshop. (Remember, we are getting something for nothing here. No, it won’t replace your fancy CS3, nor Flash, nor 3D Studio Max. It was a great quest, and it was worth it. Now, in the same line, I have brought together 45 Freeware Design Programs among literally thousands and thousands.

Thanks. In a previous post I gave you a list of 85+ Free Killer Resources Every Designer Should Know, which had a great response. Open to suggestions on image editing programs. It's contrary to expectations and I feel like I'm jumping through hoops to make the simplest of things happen.

It's NOT photoshop, so why am I complaining that it's not like photoshop? Because it's not easy.

I would have used, but I couldn't even create a canvas set to milimeters, so fuck that. I'll probably end up leeching off the workplace photoshop tomorrow instead of hassling with this, but I really just hoped the free alternatives would be sufficient. I really want to take care of this tonight because it's a 5 minute job and I've been fucking around for 45 minutes. Layers snap to rulers, but rulers don't snap to shit. So I try to center the damn thing, but rulers don't snap at the center. okay, I'll make the canvas larger, than keep a square layer as a template to show where the new image needs to be resized to. I was trying to drag a larger image into a smaller canvas, then resize it to fit into that canvas, but it cuts off everything out of the frame. Like why, for example, can't I simply drag the contents of a selection into a new window and have it appear there as a layer? Why can't I simply 'copy to new layer' when having something selected? When right clicked on a selection and choosing 'create new layer' it created a blank fucking layer. Sure, a lot of it is probably not being used to the program, but as what is understood to be the open source photoshop, you'd think they could have made some more effort into making basic things just work like you'd think. So in attempting to do these seemingly simple tasks, it's just one roadblock after the next. trying to work basic things, such as taking a selection from one window, making it a new layer if I would have to, and dragging it into a new canvas where I can resize it. It's the final stage after doing art in programs like Artrage. So after updating my computer a while back, I decided I didn't need a free photoshop (know'ma'sayin') anymore because free alternatives should be sufficient and I generally like to stay clean these days.Īll I use photoshop for is dragging layers into other open windows, cropping, resizing, and generally making things centered and the proper size for print.
